App Attack! A Brief Review of 5 Social Media Apps

Facebook:

Facebook is one of the most commonly used social media in the world, and not without reason. It is very easy to use and is incredibly accessible. With just a few clicks and little to no wait time, people from all across the world can share news, videos, articles, photos, etc. Facebook also has a well developed messaging and notification system, keeping users up to date with their account.

Youtube:

Youtube goes above and beyond almost all other Social Medias, so much that it might not even be able to be properly called a Social Media. It is the single most well known central hub for videos on the web. Its sheer size has led some people to refer to it as a search engine rather than a social media. It has a very complicated and constantly updating system to present suggested videos for viewers. Like all of these systems, however, it can be hit and miss sometimes.

Skype:

Skype is most well known for its primary function to provide reliable live video and audio communication across long distance. It also has a well developed chat and message system. It is a great system for both personal and professional use.

Discord:

Discord can be called Skype’s little brother. While Skype and Discord serve similar purposes and functions as live video and audio communication, Discord is more specialized than Skype. Specifically, Discord was built for the gaming community. Discord has a more advanced audio system, being able to detect when a person is speaking so as to turn off audio when no one is talking. This cuts down on background noise.

Steam:

While not primarily a Social Media, Steam does have all the required elements of one. Steam is primarily one of the largest online gaming platforms currently, and focuses on selling games online and providing services to download said games and run them on your computer. It also has a large Social Media presence in the form of game reviews, messages between users, and open discussion boards, making it easy and convenient for gamers to communicate and share ideas over Steam.
